FAQ's

Wedding FAQ's

1. HOW SOON BEFORE OUR WEDDING SHOULD WE COME IN TO SELIX TO RESERVE OUR FORMALWEAR AND SHOULD WE PRE-REGISTER?

It’s never too soon to register your wedding and place your names into our wedding registry database... It is preferred that you pre register online at our website or visit the nearest Selix to set an appointment. Typically speaking most brides and grooms will begin the selection process 6-9 months in advance of their wedding.

2. SHOULD WE SET AN APPOINTMENT AND WHAT SHOULD WE BRING?

Yes, set an appointment. This way a formalwear consultant can set aside dedicated time to spend with the bride and groom to walk them through the selection process. It is always helpful when the Bride and Groom bring their color swatches (gown/dress/accent or theme colors). Please be prepared with the names of the men who will be wearing formalwear. Our dedicated staff will personalize the look of your wedding so that the men will look and feel great and you’ll have photography and memories to cherish for a lifetime.

3. HOW SOON BEFORE THE WEDDING SHOULD THE MEN PLACE THEIR ORDERS?

A good rule of thumb is that 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding all the men should have been measured and entered into our reservation system. That being said Selix maintains its entire inventory locally. This means we have the capability to accommodate next day and same day orders for any last men that would like to be included in the wedding.

4. CAN THE MEN BE FITTED AT ANY SELIX STORE AND HOW DO YOU HANDLE THE MEN THAT DO NOT LIVE LOCALLY?

This is a simple issue to address. The men may visit any Selix location for their fittings. They do not have to go to the store where the wedding was registered. For those men that do not live in the greater San Francisco area we ask that they visit their local tux shop, men’s store or tailor to obtain a complimentary fitting. Once this is done they may email, phone or fax their sizes to Selix.

5. DOES EVERYONE HAVE TO TRY ON THEIR OUTFITS WHEN THEY PICK UP AND WHAT IF THEY NEED SIZE CHANGES?

Selix understands how important it is that all the men look and feel great. We strongly encourage that every customer be fitted by one of our trained formalwear professionals in our store to ensure a great fit. We own, operate and house our inventory locally so we have the ability to make adjustments as needed. We will schedule your final fitting 1-2 days prior to your event. In most cases our trained staff can make the adjustments or exchanges on the spot otherwise we’ll have the items delivered the following day.

6. WHAT STYLES SHOULD WE CONSIDER FOR THE MEN AND HOW CAN WE COORDINATE THE BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES WITH THE GROOMSMEN ATTIRE?

Selix trained formalwear consultants can be very helpful in coordinating the look of your wedding whether it be traditional or contemporary. The season and time of day may also play a part in coordinating the look for your wedding. The important thing to remember is that the Groom should be distinct in some manner and compliment the Bridal gown. Many Brides consider that the groomsmen compliment the colors of the bridesmaid’s gowns. You may use vest/tie and pocket square combinations when coordinating with your color theme.

7. WHAT SIZES DOES SELIX CARRY?

Selix is one of the largest formalwear companies on the West coast. We have 13 store locations and over 400 independent dealers. We have an extensive inventory to select from including basic to designer styles. We can accommodate most any size (boys 3 to men’s 70 long) and body build. Please visit our website to see the vast array of tux styles and accessories that Selix carries.

8. WHEN CAN OUR WEDDING PARTY PICK UP THEIR TUXEDOS AND WHEN ARE THEY DUE TO BE RETURNED?

The tuxedo rentals are scheduled for final fittings 2 days prior to your wedding. The garments are due to be returned the following day of the wedding (except closed Holidays). Selix is open 7 days a week and it’s important that the garments are returned promptly so we may process them for our next customers.

9. CAN THE MEN BE FITTED AT ONE LOCATION AND DROP OFF AT A DIFFERENT STORE?

The men may visit any Selix location that is convenient to them for their fitting, pickup and return. Our unique computer system allows us to access a wedding registration from any of our Selix locations. This way it will make it most convenient for all the men in the wedding party.

10. WHO SHOULD WE CONSIDER TO WEAR FORMALWEAR IN OUR WEDDING PARTY?

Most typically the following men should be dressed in formalwear for the formal photography; Groom, Best Man, Groomsmen, Ushers/Attendants, Ring bearer, Fathers, Grandfathers and any other special friends of the families such as readers or singers. Remember this is one of the few occasions in your life where you can capture a portrait of a generational photo.

11. WHAT ARE SELIX PRICES?

The tuxedo rental prices at Selix begin at $49.95. Selix carries a large selection from basics to designers and can accommodate every budget. Pricing varies according to the style and accessory selection you choose.

12. ARE THEIR DISCOUNTS FOR THE GROOM AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE WEEDDING PARTY?

Selix believes in providing quality with value for all of our customers. Through the course of the year our wedding specials vary. It’s best contact a Selix location or visits our website for the most current promotions. Be assured that we pride ourselves on registering every wedding at Selix. We will not be undersold therefore we’ll match or beat any legitimate competitors offer on comparable garments.

13. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE WEAR FORMALWEAR?

Tuxedos make your events extra special. Tuxedos are significantly distinct from dress suits. Tuxedos are enhanced with luxurious satin on the lapels, pockets, buttons and the pant leg. A person should wear tuxedos for very special events such as Weddings, Anniversaries, Fundraisers, dances, and a range of other “Black Tie Affairs”. There is no better way to create a memory of a lifetime than dressed in a tuxedo. The men will take on an aura of sophistication, confidence and look great for their special event.

Formal Event Etiquette FAQ's

Formalwear etiquette varies in different parts of the country and at different times of the year. Some areas are more fashion oriented while other areas tend to be more traditional in style. For some general guidlines and definitions click the link below. These definitions are meant in most cases to guide you, but not to be the final word by any means. For complete information visit your nearest Selix Formalwear or call (800) SELIX-TUX to find out more specific information.

1. What do I wear for an event when the invitation requests “White Tie” attire?

Congratulations! You have been invited to a very important event. You will wear black tails (also known as black full dress) in a peak, shawl or notch style of lapel with traditional black tuxedo pants. Your shirt, bowtie and vest should be white pique fabric (as a last resort other fabrics can be substituted if white pique is not available) and your studs and cufflinks will both be white. Black patent leather lace-up shoes are traditional and under no circumstances is a casual black shoe appropriate. You may also be required to wear white gloves, top hat and/or cane depending upon what else the invitation might request.

2. What do I wear for an event when the invitation requests “Black Tie” attire?

You are invited to wear a tuxedo or white dinner jacket depending upon the formality of the group or occasion. If the occasion is a “Black Tie” Mardi Gras event, you are probably welcome to make the tuxedo colorful and unusual. On the other hand, if the dinner will be a “Black Tie” retirement dinner for an executive in your company, then you probably would be more appropriate in a classic black tuxedo with matching black accessories. If you are in doubt, stay with the classic black look. You can’t loose because everyone looks great in a tuxedo. If you have questions, call the nearest Selix Formalwear store at (800) SELIX-TUX and we will help you figure out what will best serve your occasion.

3. What do I wear for an event when the invitation requests “Black Tie Optional” or “Black Tie Invited” attire?

“Black Tie Optional” is a very popular kind of formal event. What this really means is: “we would like you to wear a tuxedo, but if you are not able to wear one, then you may attend by wearing a suit.” We suggest you wear a tuxedo because it is the intention of the hosts to make the event as formal as possible. And dressing more formal may make your evening more enjoyable knowing that you are dressing as your hosts would desire you to. If you have further questions, then call the nearest Selix Formalwear store at (800) SELIX-TUX and we will help you figure out what will best serve your occasion.

4. What do I wear for an event when the invitation requests “Formal Attire”?

This is usually another way of stating that this event requires that you wear a tuxedo. You would follow the same instructions as if the event reads “Black Tie.” However, if you have questions or this does not fit with your image of what the hosts would like you to wear, then please contact them and get clear instructions on what they are asking. It is much better to find out a head of time what kind of dress the hosts are expecting than to show up and be embarrassed because you did not ask.

5. What do I wear for an event when the invitation requests “Semi-Formal Attire”?

Suits and sports coats are generally acceptable for this kind of occasion. The hosts want to make sure that everyone understands that this is not a “jeans and T-shirts” kind of event. Selix Formalwear rents both suits and sports coats. Try our Cashmere sport coat and pant combination for a luxurious “semi-formal” look.
